The MACD is a forex indicator that is made up of 2 moving averages. Its actual name is the Moving Average Convergence Divergence indicator. This indicator is commonly utilized in the forex trading business.

There are two primary uses of utilizing the MACD indicator, trend identification and market momentum. This gives extra data to the viewer at a glance. To create this tool, a 12 period (EMA) and subtracting its 26 period exponential moving average.

This indicator is placed below the price charts where it fluctuates above and beneath a center line that is given the value of zero. Another line formed by a nine period line is also plotted on the indicator window. The nine period MACD is the signal line.

When the indicator line is above zero, this tells the trader that the 12 EMA is trading above the 26 EMA. Conversely, if the MACD is below zero that means that the 12 EMA crossed beneath the 26 EMA line. In actuality, this indicator is a moving average cross over system. The markets are thought to be bullish if the indicator begins to trade over the zero line.

If the reverse happens, the markets are though to be bearish instead. The purpose of the signal line is to further confirm bullish or bearish momentum. So we are keeping an eye on two cross over movements. A cross over the center line along with a cross over the 9 period MACD signal line.

Should it expand over the zero value, the market is bullish along with should it expand beneath zero, the markets are bearish. It is an additional tool employed to confirm the market momentum.

The MACD is a trend indicator which implies traders should avoid using it when the market is side trending. Commonly, if the indicator is trading close to the zero line, this is an sign the market is side trending.

If for some reason, the indicator starts to trend in the opposite direction of price movement, this may be a sign that the markets will go through a reversal soon.
